Review
Well the main question was is ADHD curable....
Our short documentary is about the lives of 2 ADHD sufferers. We decided to follow 2 characters of different ages so that viewers could see the differences and similarities the dissorder had amongst different age groups. Both The sufferes were girls, which added to our authenticity boys are usually more misbehaved than girlies.
The use of our phyciatrist educates the viewers about ADHD, as the subject is not brought up that often, and the symptoms are highlighted. Whilest filming Vox Pops, we realised that older people were the ones that were mostly aware of the dissorder, whilst younger community were nt, meaning this was a ideal subject for our younger audience to watch to educate themselves.
Our overall aim with this documentary was to make viewers more aware of ADHD and to find out whether it is curable.....
Title - Wild
Cast - Monique Flora, Riann Flora, Dr Robin and Rishika Kumar
Interesting Fact
After the interview with Dr Robin me and my two fellow directors where crossing the road and i nearly died due to a car nearly hiting in to me but heres the interesting part as Hardeep is meant to be a really good friend of mine and is meant to save me from dying however, instead stood there and shouted out "ohhh Vanita's dead" hmmm interesting!!
Review
Wild a documentary which focuses on a mental issue or in other words a mental disorder mainly affected in children. The short documentary looks in to the lives of two attention deficit hyperactive disorder suffers and how it affects their lives or does it not? The documentary Wild does not only focus on the two main protagonists however shows other views on attention deficit hyperactive disorder is it only a con? Or a money making scheme? What causes attention deficit hyperactive disorder and is it curable?
Eighteen year old Rishika Kumar presents herself as a emotional individual who has been highly affected with this disorder and eight year old Monique Flora a hyperactive and loud child who expresses her disorder differently to Rishika.
The use of many techniques brings together a hitting documentary which presents its argument or message in a unique way to its audience.
Title – Wild disorder
Interesting Fact:
Hardeep, Jalna and Vanita went to London to film Dr robin(Phyciatrist) who gave a sense of professionalism to our documentary, unfortunately we filmed him with the mike turned off as a result we had to go re-shoot Dr robin.
Hardeep and Jalna stayed up all night trying to load the footage up on to the computer however, in the end it turn out we had the wrong wire therefore we resulted in getting the wire off a fellow student whom came to the rescue.
Review:
What is attention deficit hyperactive disorder? What are the causes? Does it come naturally or is it inherited through genes? People who suffer from this how do they cope? How do they feel?
The short documentary represents the life of two real life people whom suffer from attention deficit hyperactive disorder. Wild explore the lifestyle of a day to day basis of two protagonists Monique Flora 8 and Rishika Kumar 18. Monique Flora a hyper yet emotional girl lets us into her world to see how her life is through her angle. Rishika Kumar shares her struggles and emotional thoughts making us identify with her point of view.
Wild doesn’t only show real life experience also gives an insight to what actual attention deficit hyperactive disorder is, gives general issues that have been arisen and debates which follow in our society today.
The use of montage, editing and music creates a sense of heart touching feel to many scene that occur in the documentary. The use of instrumental music created an almost impact feel of the subject where viewers can sympathies with the protagonist.
Many viewers are to identify with the protagonist and relate back to the following problems. The documentary follows the lives of two different people keeping the audiences concentration throughout the documentary.

For my practical production, I worked in a group with two others to produce a documentary called ‘Wild’. The documentary is based on a disorder called Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The documentary is to education audiences on the disorder. The documentary also investigates on two characters one aged 11 and the other 18 about their disorder and how it affects their day to day life. As a group we thought it was important to have the title of the documentary title linked to the disorder and the word ‘wild’ perfectly describes those who suffer from ADHD. However this also created an enigma as the word ‘wild’ could relate to many other subjects.
As a group we decided that we would share all the responsibilities equally, with this each group member ideas were used. Hardeep was mainly in charge of the camera and any other equipment that was booked out. Whilst filming I was hospitalised so I missed out on loads of filming, however then later was back and did participate in some of the filming. It could also be seen clearly that Jalna and Hardeep did loads more editing as I was abroad for my treatment however did as much as I could. However the editing time was a stressful part of creating the documentary as we did not follow our story board so we had a few problems for the narrative and story line.
The opening of the documentary starts off with a reverse shot of a background full of paint, the image then goes in a reverse shot and the paint becomes clear as hands of paint come and the title ‘wild’ appears. We used a childish instrumental and also the colours of the pain are bright more child like. This is so that audiences can relate to the whole starting of sequence to children as ADHD is more common in children.
There are a range of images throughout the documentary to convey and pass on our message to the audiences and most images have a voice over to them relating back to the main topic and subject ADHD. We carefully selected some vox pops to define what ADHD means. We used each word from a different vox pop and let each shot cut in straight after one another. After the definition we had some vox pops explaining what ADHD actually means.
We used parallel sound in the documentary as we felt that the music can also send out a message to the audiences. We used a song by Sugar Babes called ‘Ugly’; this song enables the audience to see how the characters of the documentary feel with the disorder. The mise en scene was carefully decided on for example when the voice over explains about how we caught up with one of our protagonist ‘Monique’ after school, she was dressed in school uniform. Also when the voice over of ‘Monique’ explains her behaviour amongst others, we show it in a garden with her playing around with other characters.
We gave the documentary our fullest attention as every minor mistake was corrected many times and every detail was looked in to. We also re shot many times, as we failed to get the right effect the first few times. We decided to challenge stereotypes, instead of having a naught boy as the protagonist we decided to have a naughty Asian girl. We also had a female voice over; this also challenges the stereotype of having a typical male voice over. Having a female voice over does not only challenge stereotypes but as the topic or main subject of the documentary is to do with a touching and unfortunate disorder, having a female voice over creates a sense of sympathy to the protagonist. After studying ‘Bowling for Columbine’ in module two, we witnessed that the realism of the documentary lies in the editing and producing shaky shots by using a hand held camera. We were also inspired from other documentaries such as ‘Body Shock’, we did not show our interviewer and only used a voice over, similarly to the documentary we looked at. We also interviewed the protagonist’s sister, this gave our documentary a sense of realism and gave the subject a powerful appeal, as the sister of the protagonist is targeting and attacking the sufferer of ADHD.
We used on screen text to keep the audience focused on to the screen, we also had sound which was parallel to what was being written on the screen however we used both to reinforce what was being said. We used a clear and standard font so it shows the strict and seriousness of the subject.
A strength is that we used young Asian females as our protagonist and other characters. This is unconventional and has gone against a patriarchal society. We challenge the stereotype of good young Asian females into naughty and disruptive.
Our cinematography was done to our best appeal, as we have used a range of different shots. For example we did a fade out of the second character ‘Rishika’ in a reverse shot being physically abusive to show her ‘wild’ side. The documentary ‘Wild’ will be shown on BBC1 as BBC1 is a public service broadcaster, also the main reason for this documentary is to educate audiences so therefore it is most convenient for the documentary to be shown on BBC1. The main audience for the documentary is 13 + of any gender. The documentary is focused on young teenagers to educate them as early as possible so this documentary is mainly targeted at a young audience
In conclusion, ‘Wild’ delivers its main purpose to the audience which is to educate them about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Cinematography
~ Need to use a tripod when doing vox pops getting steady shots

- We had a change of character as our other character couldn’t film this week, but we managed to get our selves another character which is good news.
- We have done most filming with our new character, we have completed most of our storyboard which is interviews with a teacher, parents and Haley asking their views on ADHD.
- Me, Jelly and Binu went to see Dr robin on Monday ...unfortunately i didn’t turn the mike on...sooo we got footage of him ...buh we cant hear him....:(:(....soo i booked another appointment on Monday with him soo we can re-shoot. However, when we saw Dr robin he helped us soo much understanding ADHD better and answered our key question woohoo!
- We have got different scene with Haley such as a bedroom, playground, living room scene therefore most of our production is nearly done....soo the question is what’s left????......basically, we jus got to re- shoot Dr Robin again!!!!!!

A twist!!
Many people think ADHD is a fraud because they believe that children are naturally meant to be be a bit loud and hyper however some argue that this is a disorder because having lack of concentration is not part of a child's healthy lifestyle.
i also did some research on how ADHD is actually diagonosed, and this how it is; The following ADD / ADHD Adult Self Report Scale (ASRS) questionnaire can be used as a starting point to help you recognize the signs/symptoms of Adult ADHD but is not meant to replace consultation with a trained healthcare professional. An accurate diagnosis can only be made through a clinical evaluation. Regardless of the questionnaire results, if you have concerns about diagnosis and treatment of Adult ADHD, please discuss your concerns with your physician. So FaR...
- I made an appointment with Dr Robin on 19th feb, whilst talking to him on the phone, he knows a lot about ADHD as he deals with many patients who contain this disorder, and knows a lot of background info.
- We have finished our vox pox, asking the question ' what is ADHD', we have asked a variety of people showing a good understanding of the subject.
- We were suppose to film Hayley in a classroom scene last week, but looks like we didn't achieve to get there, therefore we have to complete the classroom scene with ms Cole this week, as she is happy to star in our production.
- As a group we wanted to get a professional voice over, i e-mailed BBC 1, Channel 4 and five... i received a mail back from five saying that we are able to get a professional voice over......BUT.....we got to pay £250....so the idea of getting a professional voice has vanished. Therefore we will test out all three of our voice and who ever voice seems the most professional will be doing the voice over.
- This week we need to start shooting our main story line which is Hayley ... on monday we will begin with doing a playground and classroom scene.

Preparation of practical production - Wild disorder
1. Intro – showing on BBC 1 (people dancing) research openings for programmes form ideas
2. Voice pox asking people ‘What is ADHD?’ – we want to create an authenticity by making people not know what this disorder is as it is not very common
3. Types of shots included in scene one
- Close up
- Long shots
- Fast edits
- Cuts
- Shots used such as fade, pan ect.
The last person shown on the voice pox is a psychiatric who will tell us the definition of ADHD.
Scene two
* We will introduce our main character who is a 13 year old girl called Hailey which suffers from ADHD
* Hailey will be shot in the school playground – there will be a voice over introducing her whilst the camera is focusing on other children in the playground. When the voice over has finished introducing Hailey we will zoom the camera into Hailey and final show who she is.
* A song will be playing whilst the character is being introduced.
Scene three
Ø This will be a shot of a classroom when Hailey is shown to be much disrupted and very talkative.
Ø Do not pay close attention to details;
Ø Don’t stay focused on play or school work;
Ø Don’t follow through on instructions or finish school work or chores;
Ø Can’t seem to organize tasks and activities;
Ø Get distracted easily; and Lose things such as toys, school work, and books
We will show some of these things in our scene three as they will show Hailey to have this disorder well.
Scene 4
- Run over car scene – we have looked at other adverts such as ‘pay attention when crossing roads’
- We will show how Hailey is careless and doesn’t seem to bother about the things around her as she runs into the road, but she doesn’t die as the car stop close by her.
- This scene will have many long shots of young teenagers
Scene 5
* In our documentary we want to film a professional to make the documentary have a realism effect.
* Therefore we are interviewing Mr Beckles Hailey councils as he will tell us the ins and outs of ADHD
* As interviews do tend to get boring whilst Mr Beckles is talking we will focus the camera on Hailey to make the documentary more interesting
* We will have a sound bridge going on to the next scene
Scene 6
- To end the documentary we will answer our key question which is ‘is this disorder inherited or is it a form of socialisation?’
- We will debate at the end
- We will show medical evidence what doctors say that there is no cure or some says that this is not even a disorder
- Final at the end of the production we will provide help lines were suffers can talk to someone

Is this the cure for ADHD ???
Monday, 22 January 2007
Does this look like a laughing mattter?
Well this was featured in the cartoon 'Southpark', and is an example of where the condition ADHD is made fun out of.
The video above was produced in 1988 which is a new report in America; a medical report which tells us about the in and outs of this disorder (AHDH). The video shows what the professional, real life people and people who have suffered feel about this disorder and how it has affected them or people.
The target audience for this medical report are people who don’t know about this disorder, doctors, nurses and people who suffer from ADHD. This documentary appeals to them as they are able to see what type of medicine is available to them.
This video follows typical conventions of documentaries e.g. uses voice over, real life people and professionals.
Overall, by looking at this video as a group we do tend to inherit a few ideas, mainly the use of professional such as a psychiatrics we want to add that in our documentary as it give a sense of realism.

Statistics
On average, there are 1 to 3 children who have ADHD in every classroom of thirty students.
Three to six more boys are diagnosed than girls.
The rate of emotional development for children with ADHD is 30% slower than their non-ADD peers. For example, a ten-year-old with ADHD operates at the maturity level of about a 7-year-old; a 16-year-old beginning driver is using the decision making skills of an 11-year-old.
65% of children with ADHD have problems with defiance, non-compliance and other problems with authority figures, including verbal hostility and temper tantrums.
25% of students with ADHD have other serious learning problems in one or more of these areas: oral expression, listening skills, reading comprehension, and math.
Half of all ADHD students have listening comprehension problems.
About one-third of these students have one or more of the following:
Languange deficits (poor listening comprehension, poor verbal expression, poor reading comprehension)
Poor organizational skills
Poor memory
Poor fine motor skills
Students with ADHD are two to three times more likely to have problems with expressive language than their non-ADD peers.
75% of boys with ADD are hyperactive; 60% of girls with ADD are hyperactive.
40% of children who have ADHD have at least one parent who has ADHD
50% of children who have ADHD also have sleep problems.
Parents of a child who has ADHD are three times as likely to separate or divorce as parents of non-ADD children
Teenagers with ADHD have almost four times as many traffic citations as their non-ADD peers.
Teens with ADHD have four times as many car wrecks and are seven times more likely to have a second accident.
21% of teens with ADHD skip school repeatedly.
35% eventually drop out of school.
45% have been suspended.
30% have failed or had to repeat a year of school.
Scary Facts?
xx J A L N A xx
Documentary Research
As a type of film or television develops, filmmakers and directors find certain techniques that become useful or effective in creating texts. These techniques get used again and again, and eventually they are associated with and are used to define certain types of texts. The techniques then become known as conventions.
Documentary has its fair share of conventions, which we can recognize in such mockumentaries as This is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind, for these films call heightened attention to the conventions in order to make fun of them.
Below is a list of some conventions in documentary, along with some example works. Note that not all documentaries possess all of these traits.
Archival Footage and Photographs
Archival materials include old photographs, newsreel footage, and even shots from fiction films. For example, The Atomic Cafe makes exclusive use of archival footage from the 1940s and 1950s to spoof American’s Cold War fear of an atomic bomb, and Feed culls footage from the 1992 primaries to show presidential hopefuls being anything but presidential. The Civil War employs an endless number of still photographs.
Talking Heads
Talking heads are people interviewed to explain or comment on the text’s subject. These people usually are shown in their offices (sometimes with a wall of books behind them) or in their homes. For example, Hearts and Minds includes interviews with both American and Vietnamese people to offer their perspectives on the war. Vernon, Florida also makes use of an interesting selection of talking heads.
Jiggly Camera
A wobbly camera is often attributed to documentary. As cameras became more portable and more affordable, filmmakers did more on-location shooting, and keeping the camera steady was somewhat difficult when it came to following the action. Steadicam, a camera stabilizing system, aids in correcting what some perceive as a problem. The fiction film The Blair Witch Project makes use of the jiggly camera as a means of reinforcing its documentary-like style.
Voiceover Narration
Voiceover narration occurs when a voice is heard on the soundtrack without a matching source in the image. In other words we hear the voice speak but we cannot see the speaker utter the words. The voice often explains or comments on the visuals. Early documentary made extensive use of this convention, including Pare Lorentz’s When the Plow Broke the Plains and The River. A more contemporary example is Ansel Adams.
Re-enactments
A re-enactment stages real events that already have occurred. Sometimes they include the people who experienced the events orginally, but more often they incorporate actors playing parts. The Thin Blue Line makes extensive use of this convention to assist in making its argument. Most documentary filmmakers shoot events where they actually occur.
Real People
For the most part, the people we see in a documentary are real people. We can assume that if we went to Flint, Michigan, we may meet the “Pets or Meat” lady from Roger & Me. Or if we went to Texas, we may meet the people participating in the content to win a new truck in Hands on a Hard Body.

The childs progress at school would need to be checked often, therefore in some extreme cases a specialist would need to be there.
Although there is no cure for this dissorder, it can be treated and maintained. This can be done with the use of therapy, where drugs are also used to help the child cope with the dissorder.
Some experts think that certain vitamin, mineral, or omega-3 fatty supplements can help to treat ADHD. Again, the evidence is not conclusive, but the safety of high doses of supplements is unproven so care must be taken. Nevertheless, eating a varied and balanced diet, including oily fish (eg mackerel, herring, trout), which is high in omega-3 fatty acids, certainly helps to promote healthy development in children. Some also believe that the reduced intake of sugar might help, however these are not for definate and changes in the childs diet would need to be cheked with the GP.
It can be difficult caring for a child with this dissorder, however to make it easier there are National support groups available for those who have members of their famile with ADHD, and are given opurtunities to meet other families with the same problems.
